Two big reasons imo make buying individual stocks worth it, and it has nothing to do with maximizing returns: It's fun - I work in financial services for a living, 99% of my portfolio is index funds. The last 1% is individual stocks, it takes time, I lose a lot sometimes, but you wouldn't say spending $50 a week on a hobby is a waste
