Mar 10, 2016 · A vault is just an extruded arch. The space under the vault is still the vault. It's location relative to the nave makes it an ambulatory. I couldn't find anything that suggests it has a special name when it's radial in plan.

Oct 28, 2019 · The barrel vault ceiling you see in the Santorini photo would have been made using the interlocking arch principle locked in with a keystone. It is probably brick or stone although you could use any, preferably lightweight, block. A wooden arch form would be fitted underneath the ceiling space and bricks mortared in place on top of the template.
