Whittier is located in Los Angeles County, about 12 miles southeast of the City of Los Angeles. A five Member City Council under the Council-Manager form of government directs the City. Whittier is a charter law city and was incorporated in 1898.

Since 1995, Whittier, a modern California city established in the late 1880’s, and Changshu, a bustling Chinese city with a history that goes back 3,000 years, have been Sister Cities.

Uptown Whittier, our charming historic shopping district, is the "heart of Whittier" and features an eclectic array of boutiques, a variety of dining opportunities that range from casual barbecue to fine dining and a historic restored multi-screen movie theatre.

The City of Whittier requires all businesses operating in the City to pay an annual business license tax. Any person who conducts any business, trade, profession, calling or occupation in the City is required to obtain a license whether or not the physical business address is in or outside the City.

The City of Whittier has a diverse and colorful history beginning with the Gabrielino Indians who first inhabited the area during the City’s pre-history. Later, Spanish California (1769-1821) would influence the region with the establishment of both missions and large ranchos.

Whittier residents received one 96-gallon green container for greenwaste, one 96-gallon blue container for co-mingled recyclables, and one 64-gallon black container for refuse. All refuse, greenwaste, and recyclables are collected on the same day.
