China said on Tuesday it would restrict exports of five metals used in defence, clean energy and other industries in response to fresh U.S. tariffs, refraining from the outright export bans Beijing has previously used against Washington.

In a separate move on Tuesday, China’s Commerce Ministry said that it would tighten control of exports of tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum and indium products. The controls didn’t single out exports to any particular country.

China curbed the export of five minerals important for the U.S. defense industry on Feb. 4 in a swift response to the Donald Trump administration imposing 10% tariffs on Chinese goods.

South Korea's industry ministry said Wednesday it will monitor and respond to any possible impact from China's export restrictions on strategic minerals in an apparent retaliatory measure against the United States' recent tariff imposition.
