Islamabad: Gwadar has become a significant challenge for the Shehbaz Sharif-led Pakistan government. Authorities are now faced with a dilemma: whether to relocate the starting point of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) or fully hand over the area to China.

CPEC’s ambitions for Gwadar included the creation of 2 million jobs, but these goals remain far from being achieved.

The Gwadar airport, funded under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), was initiated in March 2019 during Imran Khan’s tenure and inaugurated in October 2024 by Shahbaz Sharif.

Pakistan and China were recently at loggerheads over the control and ownership of Gwadar Port with Islamabad stating that the port, which was built with substantial Chinese investment, belongs solely to Pakistan and won't be handed over to any foreign entity.

The newly inaugurated Gwadar airport in Balochistan has been branded a "donation" by the Chinese Communist Party's mouthpiece, Global Times. This even as Pakistan hailed the USD 230-million airport as a "symbol of friendship".
