Ripken died unexpectedly on New Year's Day after "suffering complications from a serious, undiagnosed medical condition which he sadly could not recover from," according to an Instagram post. He was eight at the time of his death.

Ripken’s final appearance was on Dec. 22. He had the opportunity to retrieve a kicking tee for the Carolina Panthers at their last home game of the season. “Thank you, Ripken, for all the amazing memories you have given us. You were a once in a lifetime dog and will be so incredibly missed,” the Facebook post said.
