An unusual winter storm swept through the Deep South on Tuesday, bringing significant and even once-in-a-lifetime snowfall to unexpected areas.

The winter storm brought up to about 2 inches of snow over parts of north Georgia and areas south of Interstate 20. “There was a sharp cut off in accumulating snow basically right along and near I-85 with not much, as expected, over areas north and west of Atlanta,” Meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

The snow has begun falling in metro Atlanta leading to a Winter Storm Warning to be expanded for the area. The FOX 5 Storm Team takes a look at the latest.

Tuesday is a First Alert Weather Day as snow showers are possible across parts of the metro during the afternoon and evening hours.

Georgia is under a State of Emergency as a historic winter storm brings icy roads, and freezing temperatures. Metro Atlanta has faced 50+ hours below freezing, with temperatures set to drop further. One death has been reported,

Jan. 21, 7:40 p.m. GDOT is warning motorists to stay off roads due to icy conditions. We’ve heard various reports of impassable side roads across Atlanta and cars being abandoned along North Druid Hills and North Decatur Road in DeKalb County.
