The Central Park drone show on New Year's Eve has been canceled after a drone fell and severely injured a boy at a similar event in Florida.

The New York Road Runners cancelled its fleet of 500 drones less than a week before its annual midnight run event in a decision organizers say was out of their control.

Central Park's New Year's Eve drone show was cancelled following a drone accident in Florida that left a child severely injured. The organizers were unable to arrange an alternative event in time.

The New York Road Runners customarily shoot off fireworks during their midnight run in the popular Manhattan park, but opted for a drone show after a record brush fire period throughout the city last month.

With Dec. 31 less than a week away, the Central Park show could not go on, according to New York Road Runners, the group that organizes the still-happening Midnight Run through the park on New Year’s Eve. The drone show, like the fireworks most years, was meant to accompany the run.

At least five drone shows have been canceled or have paused the use of the systems, after several drones struck a crowd at a holiday show in Orlando on December 21.
