In 1995, Siridhamma College was founded by Dr. Richard Pathirana, the Educational Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, to fulfill the need for education in the Akmeemana seat. The school was opened on February 6, 1995, by the late Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who registered the first student's name, M.G. Kanchana Dilhani Ranasinghe. The school was named after the monk Honorable Thero Labuduwe Siridhamma, the first Buddhist monk to graduate from Oxford University. The school began with 90 students and one building and expanded over time, accepting students up to Grade 6 and becoming increasingly popular throughout the country.
